Today is a 100 years since the Wright Brothers put a 'heavier than air' machine into the air. And the world has changed so much since then!!
A good site for learning all about the Wright brothers is http://www.first-to-fly.com
I remember first reading about them, when I was about 7...there was a big article about the Wright Brothers and how they persevered for their airplane in the Readers Digest.
Today an airplane takes off every minute somewhere in this world. An England to India(Mumbai) trip by sea took over 6 months and 3/10 passengers would not survive the journey. Later when steam ships were built the journry time was cut to 4 months but today I can fly from London to Mumbai in about 11 hours.
Two men changed the way we travel. And everytime I see an Airplane I say to myself...see anything is possible..I tell myself that man with his intelligence and labor has conquered nature.
We are like the birds now.
This is a nice poem by the Scottish poet Walter Wingate written just when flying was a new(and dangerous) fad...
